The Breath of God

God breathes, and uncountable numbers of universes take shape.

By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. – Psalms 33:6

He breathes into humankind and we become embodied souls.

The Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. – Genesis 2:7

He breathes his very essence over us, filling and empowering us to carry on his mission.

And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” –John 20:22

He breathed out life-giving words, revealing himself and showing us how to live well.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.  – 2 Timothy 3:16-17

He breathes upon my window tonight, and leaves a work of art for my delight and wonder.

The breath of God produces ice, and the broad waters become frozen. Job 37:10

Breathe on us, O Lord, and in us. Breathe love. Breathe hope.

Breathe courage into us who walk in the shadows of fear. Breathe joy into us who calibrate our existence by disappointment.

Breathe wisdom into us who love the small confines of our opinion. Breathe peace into us who nourish a place of anger in our souls.

Breathe healing into our secret wounds, over scars still throbbing in the night.

Breathe life into us so that these dry bones can rise to tell the story of your grace and spread resurrection hope in this world of ashes.

“Breathe on me, Breath of God,
fill me with life anew,
that I may love the way you love,
and do what you would do.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
until my heart is pure,
until my will is one with yours,
to do and to endure.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
so shall I never die,
but live with you the perfect life
for all eternity.” – Edwin Hatch

  1. Oh, what intricate beauty…only God! Your writing today so blessed me. Focusing on the Word just ministers to the soul, like nothing else…HIS Spirit. Thanks so much. (Also congratulations, just got Kelsey’s Christmas card)❣️
